Scene Around Town: Vogel and Genesis Women’s Shelter

As Society Editor for the Katy Trail Weekly I oversee the publication's Scene Around Town feature, which shines a spotlight on nonprofit and community events each week. In this week’s September 12 issue, I’m featuring scenes from Vogel’s high-energy corporate dodgeball tournament Dodge For A Cause which bounced back in a big way at SMU’s Moody Coliseum. Thirty-two spirited teams faced off for bragging rights, diving, dodging, and ducking their way through a night of friendly competition—all in support of Vogel, a Dallas nonprofit dedicated to helping children and families overcome homelessness and poverty. Sewell Automotive, competing as “The Dodgefather’s VII,” clinched the championship title, while Houlihan Lokey’s “Dip and Dodgers” claimed second place. But the biggest win of the night came off the court: more than $132,000 was raised to support Vogel’s mission.

Also featured were scenes from Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support who recently wrapped a dazzling night above the Dallas skyline with nearly 200 of its closest supporters to celebrate #4decades4her. In honor of the nonprofit’s 40th anniversary, the Crown Block Room atop Reunion Tower was filled with people who believe relationship violence has no place in our city. Currently, 1 in 3 women in Texas will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
