Scene Around Town, Katy Trail Weekly (April 16, 2021)

As the Katy Trail Weekly’s Society Editor I oversee the publication's Scene Around Town feature, which shines a spotlight on nonprofit and community events each week. In the April 16-22 issue, I was pleased to spotlight Friends of the Arboretum, the membership group that supports the Dallas Arboretum, who held their annual dinner during the height of Dallas Blooms on March 24. About 250 guests attended and enjoyed cocktails and passed hors d’oeuvres. Tram drivers gave tours throughout the garden to see the Japanese cherry trees and the 500,000 spring flowers—tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and more—that were in full bloom in every color palette. Dallas Arboretum Board Chairman Jim Ryan welcomed and thanked these special friends who provide important financial gifts, especially during last year. Dallas Arboretum Vice President of Gardens Dave Forehand gave an update on the state of the garden letting them know that the snow formed a blanket over the spring flowers actually protecting them from the freeze, though tulips do like the cold weather! Then guests had a delicious dinner in one of three places—Rosine Hall, A Tasteful Place and the DeGolyer House—while they visited with one another. For more information on joining the Friends of the Arboretum, visit dallasarboretum.org.

Also featured is The Senior Source who is celebrating its 60th birthday this year by inviting all of Dallas’ older adults to move and groove it! The Diamond Dance-Off kicks off April 1 for Dallas and Collin County residents aged 60 and older who are invited to film and submit home dance videos. Submissions will close on May 3. The public can vote for their favorite local dancers online to move them forward in the competition. Celebrity judges will determine the best of the bunch in a live, final round in June. Four finalists, one from each dance category, will compete live in front of local celebrity judges for The Diamond Dance-Off Crown Title and a $500 prize. Other awards up for grabs include an award for most creative video, oldest performer to submit a video, and the fan favorite. Visit https://theseniorsource.org/diamond-dance-off/ for more information.

Reliant recently present The Family Place with a $100,000 check which will go toward repairing the nonprofit’s largest emergency shelter that was severely damaged during the storm. In February, The Family Place had to evacuate more than 120 women and children due to extensive water damage. The repairs include rebuilding transitional housing apartments and emergency shelter bedrooms, replacing ceilings, sheetrock and flooring, and providing new furnishings and mattresses. The donation is part of the initial $4 million commitment from Reliant and parent company NRG Energy, Inc. to address food and water shortages, temporary or damaged housing and the overall winter storm recovery effort across Texas.

Lastly, the Park Cities Historic and Preservation Society (PCHPS), will hold their Historic Home Tour on Saturday, April 24, 2021 and this year, the tour is totally virtual. Tickets are $20 for an individual ticket and $250 for the Patron Porch Party level (which includes two Home Tour tickets, copy of the book A House for Texas, Charcuterie Board for two from Boxed Bites, Festive Cocktails from Jim Beam and Pogo’s Wine & Spirits, a treat from Gardenuity and more) and can be purchased at www.pchps.org
